For many, a career easily becomes a long chain of external circumstances and coincidences, often including many disappointments. But for the proactive person, there are perspectives to consider, choices to make, models to follow, and tools and techniques to apply!

For whom?

The workshops are aimed at educational institutions, transition organisations, business organisations, trade unions and professional networks who want to maximise their students' and members' prospects in the labour market. The online course is designed for individuals.

Who   should   I   listen   to?

 

Many people offer opinions about career and job searching. Take an open but critical approach to the advice you encounter. Some of it is oversimplified, while other advice is simply wrong.

So   where   do   I   start?

You need to start by finding your passion. Or rather your passions. Work becomes much more fulfilling when you're doing something you genuinely enjoy. A useful tool here is the Japanese concept of Ikigai.

And   then?


The next step is to find the market for what you offer. Which employers might be suitable? A good recommendation is to set up job alerts from job boards. Start extremely broadly to avoid missing anything.

And   after   that?

Does your offering need to be supplemented with additional courses or qualifications? If not, it's time to package yourself for the market! An online CV service can help you with both structure and design.

How   do   I   sell   myself?

With hundreds of applicants per role, you must cast a wide net and apply broadly. Many jobs are never advertised, though. Use your network to find these. Present yourself as someone people want to work with.

Generalist   or   specialist?

The pendulum is pointing towards generalists – in an increasingly complex world, people who see, understand and explain the whole picture are in demand. Skilled specialists are still needed but keep track of AI!

 

Competency-based?

 

Competency-based recruitment assumes that employers look for specific competencies and that our past behaviour in concrete situations predicts our future performance. Memorize relevant examples!

 

Show,   don't   tell?

 

This is one of the most important principles in communication. Simply claiming good things about yourself lacks credibility. Instead, share facts and stories that allow the listener to reach the desired conclusions.
